Charlie Chan comic books are based on the fictional Chinese-American detective books written by Earl Derr Biggers in 1923, many of which were adapted for motion pictures, TV and radio. Loosely based on the real-life Honolulu detective Chang Apana, Biggers conceived of the benevolent and heroic Chan as an alternative to Yellow Peril stereotypes, such as villains like Fu Manchu. Chan is a detective of the Honolulu police, though many stories feature Chan traveling the world as he investigates mysteries and solves crimes.
