Early stories of the Martian Manhunter appeared in Detective Comics in the 1960's.
In this series of Martian Manhunter comic books by J.M. DeMatteis and Mark Badger the character was changed in several ways. It was revealed that the character's humanoid appearance was due to physiological trauma and attempts to block out the death of his race, with his familiar appearance a "compromise" between his true form and a human appearance based upon his concept of what a Martian should look like.
