Continued from Startling Stories: The Thing
While Evan Dorkin isn’t the most unlikely person to ever work for Marvel, his writing for the company is still an unexpected pleasure, since it’s clear he has a real love for the old Marvel universe — The Red Ghost included.
But he also knows street-level New York City and is enough of a grumpy malcontent himself to “get” Ben Grimm (there’s none of that lovable teddy bear “Ha-Ha, I’m just kidding” nonsense here), which makes his story a lot more than just another Marvel comic book — it has the atmosphere of an independent film.
For one thing, Ben meets a woman so well-realized and far removed from Stan Lee’s demure “nice girls” that it’s actually kind of plausible when she falls for him. And Dean Haspiel’s intentionally rough art is perfect for depicting The Thing, giving him a kind of depth that gets the reader thinking about what kind of sound he makes when he walks.
