Continued in Supergirl (2005 series)
After the re-boot of Superman in 1986, DC wanted Superman to be the only surviving Kryptonian. As a result, DC reintroduced Supergirl with a non-Kryptonian origin - a lifeform comprised of synthetic protoplasm created by a heroic Lex Luthor in a different dimension. She wore a mini-skirted version of Superman's costume, but she did not have his exact powers. She possessed flight and super-strength and psychokinesis, shape-shifting and a cloaking/invisibility power. In this series, the previous Supergirl was merged with a human being, resulting in a new Supergirl. The woman that the Supergirl merged with was Linda Danvers (the name of the original Supergirl.
