Continued in Supergirl (2005 series)
After the re-boot of the Superman character in 1986, DC wanted Superman to be the only surviving Kryptonian and as a result, DC reintroduced Supergirl with a non-Kryptonian origin. She became a lifeform comprised of synthetic protoplasm created by a heroic Lex Luthor in a different dimension. She wore a miniskirted version of Superman's costume, but she did not have Superman's exact powers. While she possessed flight and super-strength, she could also employ psychokinesis, shape-shifting and a cloaking/invisibility power. In this 1996 series, the previous Supergirl was merged with a human being, resulting in a new Supergirl. Many old elements of the pre-1986 Supergirl were reintroduced. The woman that the Supergirl merged with was Linda Danvers (the name of the original Supergirl. Linda's father is named Fred Danvers, the same as pre-Crisis Supergirl's adopted father.
